SRA allowed more access to documents in Post Office scandal

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is set to be allowed access to every document related to the Post Office Horizon IT inquiry.

This means that the regulator can set to work on its own investigations on the scandal, considered one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in UK history, as featured on BBC’s Panorama programme on Monday night.

Between 2000 and 2014, at least 706 sub-postmasters were prosecuted as a result of faulty IT system, Horizon.

The SRA will be let lose to bring forward their own prosecution on any lawyer misconduct following the inquiry with investigators fully probing the Post Office’s team of in-house lawyers and external advisers for potential wrongdoing.

The SRA has already agreed a disclosure order from the Post Office in relation to the prosecutions of former subpostmasters as a result of the Horizon IT scandal.

The inquiry will potentially grant the SRA access to even more evidence about how the scandal was allowed to unfold. It has already heard testimony from some of those who were wrongly prosecuted.

Panorama featured an interview with solicitor Issy Hogg, who represented wrongly convicted postmasters. Hogg said the Post Office knew about issues with the Horizon system and question marks over prosecutions already brought, but it carried on regardless.
