Rook Irwin Sweeney is among several organizations participating in the second UK four-day workweek pilot, launched this week by the 4 Day Week Campaign in collaboration with flexible work specialists Timewise.
The first UK pilot in 2023 demonstrated that, for most companies, productivity and business performance remained stable while employee wellbeing improved, with reductions in burnout, higher retention rates, and better mental and physical health. Many companies even saw revenue increases.
This new trial explores various models of reduced hours without pay cuts. Rook Irwin Sweeney, the only law firm in the pilot, is testing a “9-day fortnight,” where employees work a four-day week every other week, ensuring service continuity throughout the week.
Through its participation, Rook Irwin Sweeney will receive independent evaluations of business performance and employee wellbeing, which will guide decisions on potentially adopting the 9-day fortnight permanently or moving toward a full four-day week. The data will also contribute to research by the University of Cambridge, Boston College, and the Autonomy Institute.
“We’re excited to explore new ways of working as part of this pilot,” said Anne-Marie Irwin, Partner at Rook Irwin Sweeney. “In preparation, we’ve already implemented changes to enhance both client service and employee wellbeing. We’ll continue monitoring the pilot closely to ensure we maintain the high service standards our clients expect. In a high-burnout industry, we’re committed to sustainable practices while upholding the quality our firm is known for.”
