Revealed: the US Law Schools that produce the highest and lowest numbers of alumni working in the legal sector

Educationdata.org revealed that the price of law school is rising, with the average total tuition increasing by $1,065 per year.

With the increasing prices of studying law in the United States, it’s essential for prospective students to make the right choice when it comes to career prospects.

This is why Schmidt & Clark examined the law schools that are regarded as the ‘highest ranking schools‘ and compared LinkedIn alumni data in order to uncover the percentages of those working in the legal sector each school has produced.

They did this by looking on LinkedIn at the schools with the largest and smallest percentage of alumni currently working in the legal sector between 1990 to 2022.

The top five schools with the largest percentage of alumni working in the legal sector were:

  1. University of Minnesota Law School: 48.98%

  1. Arizona State University College of Law- The Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law: 48.79%

  1. University of Florida- Fredric G. Levin College of Law: 46.67%

  1. University of North Carolina School of Law: 46.28%

  1. University of Notre Dame: 43.84%

The top five schools with the smallest percentage of alumni working in the legal sector were:

  1. Harvard Law School: 28.18%

  1. Yale Law School: 28.79%

  1. Stanford Law School: 32.58%

  1. University of Chicago Law School: 34.93%

  1. New York University School of Law: 35.20%

Interestingly, Yale, Stanford and Harvard had the lowest percentages of alumni working in the legal sector.

Finally, Schmidt & Clark also found that the most popular subjects after law for those working in the legal sector were ‘Political Science and Government’, ‘Business Development’, and ‘Education’.

Schmidt and Clark’s Collen Clark said: “It was eye opening, comparing the data on which schools have the highest and lowest percentages of alumni working in the legal sector.

“It was shocking to discover that Yale, Stanford and Harvard, which are regarded as the most prestigious schools in the United States, had the lowest percentages of alumni working in the legal sector.

“We hope that our findings help prospective students find the right law school so that reach their career goals”
